RENERGEX OMAN is intended to bring together businesses, sustainable energy industry trade associations, government agencies, and energy policy research organizations to showcase the status and near-term potential of the cross-section of renewable energy (bio fuels/biomass, geothermal, solar, water, wind) and energy efficiency technologies. The exhibition provides an ideal platform for key decision makers within the industry, to exchange knowledge and expertise in providing solutions to tackle the emerging challenges faced by Sultanate of Oman as well as offering business opportunities in promoting positive developments in the sector.

The demand for energy in the Sultanate of Oman is increasing rapidly, due to a combination of a rising population and strong economic growth which in turn has put power infrastructure and hydrocarbon reserves under pressure.

In particular, annual electricity demand growth has reached a rate of 8-10%, reflecting the rapid expansion of industrial areas as the economy diversifies away from the oil and gas sectors. Almost 98% of electricity is generated at gas fired facilities while 2% amounted to diesel generation. To ensure energy supply in the following decades by diversifying the electricity generation and to reduce the current dependency on diesel and gas, the Authority for Electricity Regulation remains committed to finding ways in which Oman can benefit from its abundant renewable energy resources and thereby reduce its energy deficit in an economic and efficient manner

In the face of this rapidly swelling demand, and along with the inherently finite nature of hydrocarbon resources, the Government of Oman has started to examine the possible use of renewable natural resources for the production of electricity, with a view to diversifying the energy base of the Omani economy. His Highness Sultan Qaboos Bin Said’s “Vision 2020” policy has established a goal of producing 10 percent of Oman’s total electricity requirements from renewable energy sources by 2020.

Oman possesses important untapped renewable energy resources. The level of solar energy radiation in Oman is reckoned to be second highest in the world, and high solar energy density is available in all regions. Wind is also a promising renewable energy resource for power generation, especially in the coastal and southern parts of Oman. Oman is the only country in the region with a dedicated Ministry for Environment and Climate Affairs.
